MEDICINE POLICY
In the normal day to day running of pre-school there should be no need for the administering of prescription or non-prescription medicines.
If a child is ill before pre-school they should remain at home. If they become ill during a session then the parents will be called to take the child home.
However we do sometimes have children with allergies or children who require medicine during sessions for their own individual needs. If a child should have long term or complex needs then a health plan, along with a risk assessment, will be written and agreed by the parents, staff, our insurers and any medical officer involved.
Procedure
If a child is on prescribed medication the following procedures will be followed;
If possible the child's parents will administer medicine.
If not, then medicines should be clearly labelled with the child's name, contents, dosage and in its original container.
Medicine has to be prescribed for a child by his/her own doctor.
Parents sign a medicine form to give permission for staff to administer medication.
Parents must inform the appropriate member of staff of the last time they administered the medicine and its dosage.
A trained first aider will administer medication.
Storage and Records of Medicines
All medicines kept at pre-school will be kept in accordance to the label and either in a locked cupboard or the fridge. The staff will have all the relevant training and support to administer said medicine and a written statement from the parents kept on file.
Records of the medicine, its dose and when to give will be kept in the medical book and completed every time the medicine is administered. The parents and the staff sign this each time.
The setting will ensure that the first aid equipment is kept clean, replenished and replaced as necessary. Sterile items will be kept sealed in their packages until needed and there will always be on the premises at least one qualified first aider trained to administer first aid to children.
