Emergency Evacuation Procedure

Should there be an emergency situation such as a bomb threat or a fire alert, the preschool should follow the following procedure:  At the sound of the smoke alarm or instruction from the person in charge:

  • On discovering a fire, raise the alarm.

  • Immediately evacuate the building using the nearest, safe exit.

  • The supervisor will pick up the registers, visitors book, mobile phone and address file.

  • Staff will lead the children out in an orderly manner and should assemble at the designated assembly point. (The recreation ground)

  • The deputy will check all areas including toilets and other halls.

  • Close all doors behind you as you proceed out.

  • Dial 999 and ask for the fire service. Do not replace the handset until the fire service confirms our address.

  • The supervisor will check the registers to ensure all children and staff are accounted for..

  • Only if it is not too dangerous and if you are sure you can do it quickly and safely, attempt to put out the fire using the appropriate fire fighting equipment, which can be found hanging next to all fire exits.

  • If it is not possible to return to the pre-school, all parents should be contacted and children collected. If parents cannot be contacted, the staff will remain with the children in a safe place (i.e. the village school) until the parents arrive for collection at the normal time.

Please note:

The fire practices will be held at regular and random intervals. These will be held with no regard to any conditions existing inside or outside of the premises, e.g. rain, snow, frost, mealtimes. Fire fighting equipment and smoke alarms are checked regularly to ensure they are in good working order.
All permanent staff members should be made aware of and understand how to carry out any P.E.E.P's (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan) for individual children with additional needs, should it be necessary.
